Domain 2: Classroom Environment
Domain 2 of the Danielson Framework is Classroom Environment. This includes creating an environment of respect and rapport, establishing a culture for learning, managing classroom procedures, managing student behavior, and organizing physical space. Overall, my greatest strength in Domain 2 is my classroom management (both behavior and procedures); my greatest area for improvement is establishing the culture of learning, specifically with students who are more difficult to motivate.
2a: Creating an Environment of Respect and RapportDuring my year in PDS, I built relationships and rapport with students in all of my placements. From Day 1, I used respectful, firm yet warm language with students to set the tone. On the first day of school, I asked students what our classroom climate should be to start the conversation on respect, friendship, and classroom expectations. I addressed issues that arose by using positive language, encouraging them to communicate with each other, and reminding them to practice skills we learned in Second Step such as active listening and practicing empathy. I find that treating students as competent, respectful young people encouraged them to live up to that image; I am always careful not to sound condescending and to show that I believe in their ability to show respect in their words and actions. I helped cultivate this environment by greeting students each morning, getting on their level when possible, modeling manners and "I" messages, and being honest with students about my own feelings.
